When other treatments fail, infertility can be treated with the help of Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a major procedure of ART done in cases where fertilisation do to occur naturally due to irregularities in sperm. It is used in improving the fertilisation phase of IVF treatments as well.

ICSI Procedure

The procedure of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection involves injecting a sperm into the egg in a laboratory setting and later depositing it in the fallopian tubes or uterus, once the fertilization occurs. The process is done by using a tiny tube made of glass to insert sperm into the egg that is held in place by a glass tool.

After leaving this for a few hours or probably overnight, they are analysed to check for fertilization. Once fertilised they are placed in the tubes or uterus by inserting a tiny catheter through the cervix. The number of embryos transferred is based on the age of the couple and the quality of the embryos.

The procedure of egg retrieval, in female is done by stimulating the ovaries with the help of gonadotrophin or FSH injections. This is termed as super ovulation and helps in retrieval of quality egg. The egg is retrieved from the ovary by needle aspiration or laparoscopy.

Sperm collection is done either through masturbation or through surgical procedures by creating a small incision on the testicles. The retrieved sperm is analysed for quality and genetic disorders before ICSI is performed. The process of ICSI is highly useful in cases where infertility is caused due to decreased sperm count, lack of sperm mobility, impaired sperm or sperm blockages.

Risk Factors

With a short recovery time and a success rate of 25 to 35%, ICSI is a highly beneficial procedure of ART. The risk factors associated with ICSI, is the increased probability of multiple pregnancies. This can at times prove to be risky for the mother and foetus.

ARC International Fertility and Research Centre, offers advanced and highly successful treatments for infertility including ART procedures like ICSI, IUI and IVF with a high success rate.
